Rock Beds and Arborvitaes Replace Worn Mulch in This Backyard

Old mulch beds have a way of getting tired fast. They break down, fade out, and end up looking more like a chore than a feature. That's exactly the situation we were working with here - worn-out beds that needed a full reset.

We pulled everything out and started fresh. The old mulch came out, clean edges went in, and we replaced it all with rock - a much more durable material that holds up season after season without needing to be refreshed every year. It's a straightforward swap that genuinely pays off long-term.

We also planted a row of arborvitaes to give the yard some structure and definition. They're a great fit for a backyard like this - they grow upright, stay relatively narrow, and don't require a lot of fuss once they're established. Over time they'll fill in and add a natural privacy element too.

The natural stone boulders anchored into the bed tie the whole thing together. It gives the space a grounded, finished look without overcomplicating it. That's really the goal with low-maintenance landscape installation - clean, intentional, and easy to keep looking good. Our lawn care work in the surrounding turf helps the whole yard stay sharp as a package.
